Defense Threat Reduction Agency

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), established in 1998, traces its origins to the Manhattan Project in 1942. It provides cross-cutting solutions to enable the Department of Defense, the U.S. Government, and international partners to deter strategic attacks, prevent, reduce, and counter WMD and emerging threats, and prevail against WMD-armed adversaries in crisis and conflict. The agency operates in over 50 countries, with a rich history spanning from its involvement in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II to modern efforts to combat weapons proliferation and emerging threats.
